The minutes of the WILLINGDON IN BLOOM SUB-COMMITTEE held on 25th March 2008 at The Parish Office 3 Gorringe Valley Road Willingdon BN20 9SX.

WB08/3 Nomination of Chairman and Vice-Chairman
Members agreed that Cllr Graham Broom would stand as Chairman and Cllr John Martin as Vice-Chairman

WB08/5 To discuss 2008 Willingdon in Bloom competition
Cllr Broom advised Members that Simon Hurt the co-ordinator for
Eastbourne in Bloom, would be willing to assist the Committee if needed.
Members decided to include Jevington, Filching and Wannock in the
competition and agreed to call it 'Willingdon and Jevington in Bloom'
The Committee discussed what categories to include and agreed that there
would be 4 categories.
" Private front gardens
" Window boxes and containers
" Places of Worship and Schools
" Public Houses, Restaurants and Businesses
Cllr Broom Suggested that every one that enters would receive a certificate,
which would indicate the standard they had attained. Members agreed.
Cllr Broom suggested that companies are approached for sponsorship. Members
agreed. Clerk to approach Millhams, Southern Land Services, Willingdon
Residents Association and P.J.Crocombe to request sponsorship.
Members discussed prizes and trophies and decided that trophies would be
presented to all categories except garden entries, which would receive a voucher
prize.
Members asked what finances have been allocated in the budget for Willingdon
In Bloom. Clerk to find out and report back at next meeting.
Cllr Broom advised the Committee of the 'South East in Bloom' competition and suggested that the Council aim to enter this in the future. In order to enter this
the Council would need to look at other issues within the Parish i.e. encouraging
re-cycling and environmental issues. Cllr Broom also commented that incentives
need to be identified to encourage residents to recycle more.
Cllr Broom asked what areas could be looked at for improvement. Members
suggested the Watermill area and Freshwater Square area including shops.
The Committee discussed who would make up the panel of judges; Members
agreed that the Committee would be the judges.
Members discussed the issue of flyers and posters and agreed for the Clerk to
investigate the cost of having 500 professionally printed flyers and for Clerk to
design a flyer using one of the 2007 winning garden photographs, ensuring the property's identity is protected. Members agreed for launch to be 1st May 2008,
entries to be in by Monday 30th June and judging to take place the first 3 weeks
in July.
Members agreed for competition to be advertised in Eastbourne Herald and put
on Council website. Clerk to arrange when fliers agreed.
